These are the three permitted weapons of IMCF international medieval combat — reproductions of documented historical originals, used by armoured fighters in full-contact bouts governed by rules drawn from actual medieval tournament texts, among them King René's Tournament Book of 1460. Not theatrical approximations. The exact weapons that decided outcomes on the tournament field for five centuries of European history.

Axes

The axe was the most common weapon of Viking warriors. Less expensive than a sword, faster to produce, and in practiced hands equally decisive. It required less metallurgical sophistication than a blade of even length — yet in its most refined form it became an object of extraordinary craft. The Mammen axe, found in a 10th-century Viking chieftain's burial in Mammen, Jutland, Denmark, and now in the National Museum of Denmark, is one of the most elaborately decorated objects of the entire Viking age: ceremonial iron with inlaid silver wire in the flowing organic style that gave the Mammen art tradition its name. Every axe pendant in this collection that references Mammen traces directly to that documented object.

Perun's Axe — a dedicated Slavic series within the axe collection. Perun is the Slavic sky god and thunder deity — the direct cultural counterpart of the Norse Óðinn and Thor combined: the deity who governs lightning, war, and the cosmic battle against the serpentine god Veles in the foundational conflict of Slavic cosmology. His weapon is an axe, not a hammer. The Norse and Slavic worlds were not separate universes. They were adjacent and overlapping through centuries of Varangian trade and Norse settlement across what is now Russia and Ukraine. This series is in this collection because the axe as sacred weapon of the thunder god appears across the entire northern European world under different names.

Swords

The sword was the most prestigious weapon of the Viking age and the medieval period that followed. Expensive to produce in quality steel, requiring significant skill to use effectively, and carried by those with both the status and the training. In Norse saga literature, named swords are not metaphor. Gram, Dáinsleif, Tyrfing — each carries documented fate. The warrior who picks up a named sword accepts the sword's history as part of their own.

Shields

In IMCF combat, the shield is classified and regulated as a weapon — subject to the same rules as the sword and axe, with minimum weight requirements and constraints on edge construction. This reflects historical reality. The medieval fighter used the shield offensively as much as defensively: a shield strike to the helmet followed by a sword cut is a combination documented across tournament manuals. The Norse shieldwall was not a defensive formation. It was the delivery mechanism for the men behind it — a moving structure that closed distance and created the contact zone in which individual fighters could work.
