The Vikings liked to look good. Contemporary observers noted with some surprise that the Norse bathed regularly, always carried a comb, kept their hair groomed, and tracked international fashion through their trade networks. They wore rings, pendants, arm rings and bracelets. They wore brooches elaborately decorated with Urnes-style interlace. They wore amber beads and silver chains.

But despite knowing about earrings through extensive contact with cultures that wore them, the archaeological evidence is unambiguous: the Vikings themselves did not. Not a single example of Viking earrings survives in the record.

This makes earrings the one piece of Norse-inspired jewelry that comes with no historical obligation and complete creative freedom. This collection takes that freedom and fills it with the full symbolic vocabulary of the Norse, and Celtic.

The Symbols Across the Collection

Yggdrasil — the World Tree at the centre of Norse cosmology, its roots reaching into all nine worlds, holding the entire structure of existence in place. The symbol of the nature-based belief system that sits at the heart of Norse religion — not a god, but the structure that makes all gods possible. As hanging earrings, its downward-branching form is ideally suited to the format.

Triquetra — the three-lobed continuous knot found across Viking age metalwork and Celtic carved stone. In the Norse world associated with seiðr magic — the shamanic practice most closely connected with Freyja, who taught it to Odin. No beginning, no end: the form itself is the statement.

Valknut — the three interlocked triangles of Valhalla. The symbol of those who aspire to be chosen by the Valkyries and of those who apply that standard to themselves while still living. Available in sterling silver stud format.

Mjolnir, Thor's Hammer — the most archaeologically documented symbol of the Viking age. Thor hallowed marriages and shielded communities with his hammer. Wearing it was a statement of allegiance to the old gods that Vikings made throughout the Viking age — and well into the Christian period as a quiet act of religious resistance.

Did the Vikings actually wear earrings?

No, and VKNG is honest about that. Despite knowing about earrings through contact with neighbouring cultures, no examples of Viking earrings survive in the archaeological record. This collection takes the full symbolic vocabulary of the Norse world and applies it to the one jewellery format the Vikings themselves never used.
